How to Build a Predator-Resistant Chicken Coop
Audit doors, vents, wire, latches, digging edges, roofing, and nighttime routines to reduce predator access to a backyard chicken coop.
A predator-resistant coop is not defined by one product. It is a complete enclosure with no easy opening, no weak fastening point, and a repeatable lockup routine. The most useful way to improve an existing coop is to inspect it as a system: start at the roof, follow every seam and opening, and finish at the ground.
No structure can guarantee that a predator will never get in. Local wildlife, soil, weather, construction, and maintenance all affect risk. The goal is to remove predictable access points and notice damage before it becomes an entry.
Start with a daylight security audit
Close the coop exactly as it would be closed at night. Then inspect it from outside.
- Look through every vent, window, corner, eave, and door seam.
- Push gently on mesh and panels to find movement.
- Check where wire meets framing; an edge is only as strong as its fasteners.
- Look for soil disturbance, gnawing, stretched wire, loose screws, and water damage.
- Confirm that a branch, stacked material, feeder, or roof extension does not create an unintended climbing route.
Repeat the inspection after storms, nearby construction, or a wildlife incident. A coop that was secure last season can develop warped doors, rotted wood, loose staples, or eroded soil.
Use mesh as an exclusion barrier
Chicken wire is designed primarily to contain chickens. Its openings and light wire are not a dependable barrier against many predators. Utah State University Extension specifically recommends small woven hardware cloth for predator protection and notes that rodents and other predators can defeat conventional chicken wire.
Use sturdy, appropriately sized hardware cloth or heavy-gauge mesh over openings a predator could reach. The exact opening and wire gauge should reflect the smallest local threat. Secure it to structural framing with corrosion-resistant screws and washers or another fastening system intended to resist pulling—not only a few light staples.
Pay particular attention to:
- Ventilation openings
- Windows and window screens
- Eaves and roof transitions
- Gaps around pop doors
- Corners where two mesh panels meet
- Openings around plumbing or electrical lines
Covering ventilation must not eliminate airflow. The objective is a protected vent, not a sealed building.
Stop digging at the perimeter
Predators often investigate the point where a wall or fence meets the soil. Penn State Extension describes burying run wire at least 12 inches and turning it outward about 6 inches as one approach for deterring digging. An outward horizontal apron secured at the surface is another commonly used construction approach where digging a trench is impractical.
Whichever method you choose:
- Continue the barrier around the entire vulnerable perimeter.
- Join corners without leaving a diagonal gap.
- Secure the barrier to the wall or run framing.
- Inspect after erosion, frost movement, mowing, or animal digging.
Concrete floors and solid foundations can reduce digging access, but joints, drains, and wall transitions still require inspection.
Protect the top and every door
An open run may deter some ground traffic while remaining exposed to climbing and flying predators. A secure run needs a top appropriate to local risks. Solid roofing can also provide shade and keep sections of the run dry, while mesh or netting may be used in other designs. Account for snow, wind, leaf loading, and drainage before adding a roof to framing that was not designed for it.
Human doors, access panels, nest-box lids, and chicken pop doors deserve equal attention. A latch should not release when it is bumped, lifted, or rotated once. Use a positive, multi-step closure such as a lockable latch or a latch secured by a carabiner. Verify that the door itself cannot be flexed far enough to bypass the latch.
Automatic doors can improve consistency, but they do not replace inspection. Confirm that the track is clear, the door reaches its fully closed position, backup power is adequate, and every bird is inside.
Keep the coop dry and ventilated
Security cannot come at the expense of air quality. Penn State Extension identifies dampness and ammonia buildup as signs that ventilation is inadequate for the number of birds. Place protected vents so fresh air can exchange without directing a cold draft across roosting birds.
Water intrusion also weakens security over time. Repair roof leaks, divert runoff, keep bedding dry, and replace decayed framing. Fasteners installed in soft or rotted wood may look intact but have little holding strength.
Reduce the reasons predators visit
Feed and waste can attract rodents, which in turn can attract other predators. Store feed in a tightly closed, rodent-resistant container. Clean spills, manage litter, remove carcasses promptly according to local guidance, and avoid leaving feed accessible outdoors overnight.

Create a dependable lockup routine
A strong structure can still fail when a door is left open. Use the same short sequence every evening:
- Account for the flock.
- Close and physically test the pop door.
- Secure the human door, nest access, and service panels.
- Remove or secure exposed feed.
- Walk the visible perimeter for digging or damage.

- The digging barrier is continuous and its corners are closed.

- Feed is stored in a closed, rodent-resistant container.
- Wood, wire, screws, hinges, and roof edges show no damage.
- The flock is locked in before local predators become active.
